JOHANNESBURG – Eskom has officially launched construction of a 75-megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) facility at its Lethabo Power Station near Vereeniging. The project will be built on more than 160 hectares of Eskom-owned land and forms part of the utility’s broader plan to diversify South Africa’s energy mix and reduce reliance on coal.
Although Lethabo has long been known for its coal-fired power generation, it is now being expanded into a hybrid energy site that includes renewable power infrastructure. The solar facility will also feature a 4.5-kilometre transmission line connecting it to the national grid, marking a key step in Eskom’s transition toward a more sustainable and resilient electricity system. The sod-turning ceremony for the project took place on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.
