PRETORIA- Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe says decisions on fuel price increases or decreases fall under the National Treasury, not his department. He made the remarks while presenting his department’s R2.86 billion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year in Parliament.
Mantashe explained that his role is limited to negotiating departmental funding allocations with the Treasury, including discussions around levies and taxes that influence fuel prices. He also stressed the need for balance between economic activity and environmental protection, arguing that both must work together rather than be treated as opposing forces.
