The South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) has rejected the Section 189 retrenchment notice issued by Pick n Pay, accusing the retailer of undermining collective bargaining processes. The company has proposed changes to its store labour model, a move that could affect about 22 000 workers across the country.

SACCAWU says workers are angry over the planned retrenchments and has threatened industrial action if management does not halt the process and return to negotiations. Union representative Cyril Mbenza says workers and the broader labour movement are prepared to fight to protect jobs and employee benefits.
