More than 1 200 mineworkers from Ekapa Minerals in Kimberley are still struggling to receive salaries and other payments owed to them since February. This follows a mud-rush incident at the mine that killed five workers and later led to liquidation, ending a 150-year diamond mining legacy and leaving many families without income or job security.
With workers and their families facing financial hardship, community organisations and the Northern Cape government have stepped in with relief efforts. Fundraising concerts and food drives have been organised, providing assistance such as food parcels to hundreds of affected families while hopes remain that the mine could possibly reopen in the future.
