SHARPVILLE – Lawyers representing survivors and relatives of victims of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre have launched legal action against the South African government. They are challenging apartheid-era legislation that prevented victims and families from seeking compensation through the courts.

Official records state that 69 people were killed and at least 180 wounded when police opened fire on protesters. However, later research suggests the death toll was at least 91, with more than 238 people wounded.
