EASTERN CAPE – Foreign business owners in the Eastern Cape are calling on the government to protect lawful businesses while deporting undocumented migrants. The appeal follows tensions during anti-illegal immigration protests, where some spaza shops in Buffalo City Metro were looted despite most demonstrations remaining peaceful.

Community leaders say many of the affected foreign shop owners have made positive contributions to local communities and fear further attacks if security is not increased. Eastern Cape police arrested 229 people during 28 marches, including 208 undocumented foreign nationals.
