DURBAN – The Head of Immigration and Law Enforcement at the Home Affairs Department, Stephen van Neel, says about 90% of Malawian nationals gathered at a holding site in Pietermaritzburg do not have legal documentation to remain in South Africa. The group is part of thousands of displaced Malawians currently being processed for return.

Van Neel says the undocumented nationals are being assisted in deportation and repatriation efforts, with operations also taking place in Durban. He added that the situation highlights the need for stricter border controls, noting that most of those processed in recent weeks are without valid documents.
