JOHANNESBURG  – Eleven senior police officers linked to the controversial Medicare24 tender have been suspended while disciplinary and related investigations continue. The officers, who served on the Bid Evaluation Committee responsible for assessing tender applications, are accused of failing to properly verify information submitted by alleged underworld figure Vusumuzi Matlala during the bidding process.

The suspended officers are also facing criminal charges of corruption and fraud related to the same tender and are currently out on bail. The case is scheduled to return to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 26 June. The National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption has previously alleged that the tender process was marred by irregularities and possible collusion between committee members and Matlala.
