Many Zimbabwean nationals are returning home amid growing concerns over anti-illegal immigration protests in South Africa. Bus operators have reported a sharp increase in passenger numbers, with many travellers transporting household items and furniture. While some say they are leaving temporarily until tensions ease, others have decided to leave permanently.
One Zimbabwean national, Richard Sithumbe, says he has no plans to return after being forced to leave his accommodation in Durban’s Inanda area. However, Never Makhunda, who has lived in South Africa for 18 years, says he is only visiting Zimbabwe and intends to return. He supports the need for proper documentation for foreign nationals and says he has not personally witnessed any attacks or violence.
