PRETORIA – KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been named the 2025 Newsmaker of the Year by the National Press Club. He received the award during a ceremony in Pretoria on Friday evening and said he accepted the recognition with both humility and caution.
In his acceptance speech, Mkhwanazi reflected on his controversial July 6 media briefing that drew national attention. During the briefing, he alleged political interference in police investigations and questioned the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team, comments that sparked widespread debate across South Africa’s criminal justice system.
