The Gauteng Traffic Police have raised concerns over reports that taxi patrol groups are allegedly stopping, threatening and harassing motorists on roads across the province. The groups reportedly target drivers suspected of transporting passengers illegally.
Authorities say some motorists have allegedly been forced to pay money before their vehicles were released. Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane stressed that only law enforcement officers are legally authorised to stop and inspect vehicles and urged taxi operators to report suspected illegal activities through the proper legal channels.
