JOHANNESBURG- The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has issued 230 operating licences to compliant minibus taxi and scholar transport operators during a handover event held on 22 May 2026 at the Derek Masoek regional offices in Johannesburg. The initiative is aimed at improving regulation in the public transport sector by ensuring that operators meet legal and safety requirements.
The Department says the move is part of a broader effort to modernise public transport, reduce the backlog of operating licence applications, and improve accountability in the system. Officials also emphasised that the process is intended to enhance road safety, especially for learners using scholar transport, while urging operators to prioritise compliance and passenger safety.
