PRETORIA- Suspended National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says he believes there is “something more” behind the case against him after appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Masemola appeared as accused number 17 alongside alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and several senior officials linked to the controversial Medicare tender investigation.

The case relates to the R228-million Medicare contract, which was previously reported as being worth R360-million before the amount was revised by the National Prosecuting Authority. While other accused face fraud and corruption charges, Masemola is charged with contravening the Public Finance Management Act. The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption says it has a strong case against him, but Masemola maintains that he is innocent.
