Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has raised alarm over the worsening mental health challenges facing men and boys in South Africa, describing the situation as a “silent national emergency.” She says many men continue to suffer in silence due to stigma, while limited access to mental health services further deepens the crisis.
According to the ministry, untreated mental health conditions are contributing to rising levels of substance abuse, violence, crime, family breakdowns and suicide. Spokesperson Cassius Selala says men across all age groups are affected by depression, anxiety, trauma and social isolation, driven by factors such as unemployment, economic hardship, social pressure and unresolved trauma.
