TSHWANE- Gauteng police, led by Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, arrested more than 1 000 suspects during Operation Shanela II conducted over the weekend in Temba and Hammanskraal in Tshwane. The high-density operation targeted various crimes, resulting in 31 arrests for drunk driving, 57 undocumented persons detained, and multiple arrests linked to drugs, illegal liquor trading, public drinking, gambling, and violations of the Second-Hand Goods Act. Eight unlicensed liquor outlets were also shut down for non-compliance.
In a separate phase of the operation, detectives arrested 687 wanted suspects overnight, including 142 individuals linked to crimes against women and children. The coordinated effort involved SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, traffic authorities, Community Policing Forums, and private security. Police say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen safety and reduce crime across Gauteng.
