The Sunday newspaper City Press has closed its 44-year-old print and digital newsroom, with today’s edition marking its final publication. The decision follows the publication’s shift away from print in December 2024 and a failed attempt to sustain operations as a digital-only platform.

The move comes after the digital model did not generate sufficient audience engagement and revenue to keep the newsroom running. Media commentators have described the closure as the end of an era in South African journalism, with many expressing disappointment and nostalgia over the loss of a long-standing media institution.
