LIMPOPO- The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister, Gwede Mantashe has called on communities in Steelpoort to work together with government and mining companies to combat illegal mining activities. Speaking outside Burgersfort, Mantashe warned that illegal mining poses serious risks to community safety and threatens the sustainability of the country’s mining industry.

The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister urged residents to report illegal mining operations and support efforts aimed at formalising small-scale mining. Mantashe stressed that illegal mining is a criminal offence and said those caught stealing minerals should be treated as criminals and handed over to the police for arrest.
