VAAL- The Emfuleni Local Municipal Manager appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court on 4 May 2026 facing 73 environmental-related charges linked to alleged failures to comply with waste disposal permit conditions. Sixty-five of the charges were connected to investigations by the Gauteng Department of Environment at the Palm Springs Landfill site, while eight charges related to pollution affecting the Vaal River and surrounding Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark communities.

The municipal manager, acting as the municipality’s accounting officer, was summoned over alleged non-compliance with a Waste Management Licence and a Compliance Notice issued under the National Environmental Management Act. Authorities said previous engagements had taken place to address compliance issues, but the seriousness of the offences led to the case being postponed to 1 September 2026 for further legal proceedings.
