The Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, has announced a nationwide response to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), outlining plans to vaccinate 80% of the country’s livestock by December 2026. Addressing the media, the Minister said the campaign is aimed at controlling the spread of the disease and protecting the agricultural sector from further losses.

He also confirmed the publication of the Routine Vaccination Scheme for Foot and Mouth Disease (RVS-FMD) under the Animal Diseases Act of 1984. The scheme allows animal owners to voluntarily vaccinate their livestock under state supervision, with the help of authorised private veterinarians or Animal Health Technicians. This initiative is expected to strengthen disease prevention efforts while ensuring proper oversight by state veterinary services.
