BOKSBURG- President Cyril Ramaphosa Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the Extended President’s Coordinating Council meeting held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, describing the gathering as historic for including all mayors and municipal managers for the first time. He emphasized the importance of cooperative governance across national, provincial, and local spheres, stressing that government must operate as one coordinated system rather than in silos to improve planning, implementation, and service delivery.
Ramaphosa highlighted deep challenges facing municipalities, including weak financial management, skills shortages, infrastructure decay, and poor service delivery, which have resulted in water and electricity disruptions and deteriorating roads. He outlined reform efforts such as Operation Vulindlela and the District Development Model, and called for professionalisation, reduced red tape, and stronger accountability. A major focus was the national water crisis, with the President urging urgent, coordinated action through a new Water Crisis Committee, improved infrastructure management, and strict consequence management to ensure reliable water supply and restore public trust.
