VIRGINIA- Former FBI Director James Comey surrendered to authorities on Wednesday after being charged over an Instagram post prosecutors claim threatened the life of U.S. President Donald Trump. The post featured seashells arranged to display “86 47,” with officials arguing the phrase could be interpreted as a call for violence. Comey appeared briefly in a Virginia court but did not enter a plea or make any public statement.

Comey has denied any wrongdoing, stating he was unaware of the meaning behind the numbers and accusing authorities of pursuing the case for political reasons. His lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, said they will seek to have the charges dismissed, arguing that the prosecution is selective and retaliatory due to Comey’s criticism of Trump.
