The Gauteng Department of Health has reported a significant increase in malaria infections and related deaths in the province. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, 414 cases and 11 deaths were recorded, a major rise compared to the same period in 2025.

Health officials are urging residents to seek immediate medical care if they experience symptoms such as fever, chills, and headaches, especially after travelling to malaria-risk areas. The department says it is strengthening prevention efforts ahead of World Malaria Day.
