KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has expanded his crime-fighting role to the national level, where he will lead a new countrywide initiative targeting organised crime. Despite this added responsibility, Mkhwanazi will continue serving as the provincial police commissioner after recently renewing his five-year contract.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of a new SAPS Forensic Laboratory in Durban, Mkhwanazi said his national team is already operational. The unit is focusing on analysing case dockets and identifying criminal syndicates with networks that stretch across different parts of South Africa.
