Lawyers representing Julius Malema say they are confident his five-year direct imprisonment sentence will be overturned on appeal. Malema was granted leave to appeal his sentence by the KuGompo City Magistrates Court, although his application to challenge the conviction itself was denied.

He was sentenced to five years in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm, along with a concurrent two-year sentence for a lesser charge. His lawyer, Ian Levitt, says the court has already acknowledged that another court could reach a different conclusion on sentencing, expressing strong confidence that the appeal will succeed.
