UPDATE: Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment in his firearm handling and discharge case. The ruling was handed down at the East London Regional Court in KuGompo City after Malema appeared for a second day of sentencing proceedings in a highly publicised case.

During a packed courtroom, Magistrate Twanet Olivier said the court had carefully considered and reviewed all arguments presented by the defence before making a decision. The sentencing follows Malema’s conviction for violating firearm laws linked to an incident in which he discharged a weapon in public.
