Police in the Eastern Cape are on high alert ahead of the sentencing of Julius Malema, which is set to take place on Thursday at the East London Regional Court. The Economic Freedom Fighters leader is facing sentencing in his firearm discharge case after being convicted in October last year for violating the Firearms Control Act.
The charges stem from a 2018 incident during the party’s anniversary celebrations, where Malema fired live rounds. In anticipation of the court’s decision, party supporters have held night vigils, while a large crowd gathered outside the court on Wednesday during the first day of pre-sentencing proceedings.
