Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen says South Africa’s Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination campaign is showing encouraging early progress. More than 2 million animals have been vaccinated between February and 26 March 2026, with no new infections reported in herds that have already received the vaccine.

Although FMD cases have been recorded in all nine provinces, the department says the rise in reported numbers is due to improved surveillance and faster reporting systems, rather than a worsening outbreak. Authorities say better detection has also helped identify previously unnoticed sub-clinical cases, as monitoring and awareness efforts have been strengthened nationwide.
