South Africa is set to begin the early rollout of the HIV-prevention injection Lenacapavir after receiving its first batch of nearly 38,000 doses. Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi described the drug as a “game changer,” saying it can provide up to 100% protection with just two injections a year.

The Health Department plans to prioritise high-risk groups, including adolescent girls and young women, as well as pregnant women to help prevent mother-to-child transmission. Other key groups include men who have sex with men and sex workers, with the aim of significantly reducing HIV infections and curbing the spread of the virus.
