South Africa is mourning the passing of celebrated songwriter and performer Melvyn Matthews, known as “Mr Weekend Special,” at the age of 67. His career rose to prominence in 1983 when he co-wrote and produced the hit song Weekend Special, which helped launch Brenda Fassie to international fame while he worked alongside Blondie and Pappa.

The song sold over 200,000 copies, reached the American Billboard charts, and introduced South African music to global audiences. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie described Matthews as one of the unsung architects of local popular music, praising his lasting contribution to the country’s cultural heritage.
