The commemoration marking 33 years since the assassination of Chris Hani in Ekurhuleni was disrupted after the Hani family did not attend the event. Their absence is believed to be linked to concerns over the municipality’s role in the programme.

The event also exposed tensions between the ANC and the SACP, with signs of growing political divisions. Thulas Nxesi, the SACP deputy national chairperson, said the commemoration was poorly planned, adding to criticism of the proceedings.
