South Africa’s leading short-term insurer, Santam, has partnered with the South African Weather Service to improve the country’s ability to respond to climate-related disasters. The partnership includes the rollout of nine advanced automatic weather stations across several provinces to strengthen early warning systems and help communities prepare for severe weather conditions.

The project follows successful pilot units installed in Limpopo and Mpumalanga in 2022. Santam said recent floods in Limpopo, which resulted in more than R300 million in insurance claims, highlighted the urgent need for better weather monitoring. The company believes the new stations will help close observational gaps, improve disaster preparedness, and protect lives, property, and livelihoods from extreme weather events.
